Worst part of economic stimulus package

Gosh darn it! Section 1604 of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (aka Economic Stimulus) states

None of the funds appropriated or otherwise made available in this Act may be used by any State or local government, or any private entity, for any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, or swimming pool.

How are we going to stimulate the economy without building any of these items essential to the country’s infrastructure?????

Climbing overcrossing railing to view construction work!

I subscribe to email updates on the repair work being done on Interstate-5 in Sacramento. Today’s email read:

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is advising that R Street pedestrian bridge will reopen Thursday, June 19. The overcrossing was closed for safety concerns when pedestrians were spotted climbing over the railing to view the Fix I-5 work.

How many idiots work in Sacramento? (I work for Caltrans in Sacramento, but even I’m not that stupid!)

Edit 6/19: Fixed misspelling of “subscribe.”

Commute problem – so far so good

It’s the first work day since the Sacramento I-5 repair started. There were no delays getting to work or coming back (though admittedly I left about 2:30 instead of my usual 4:40 due to a dentist appointment.) However, many state workers have alternating Mondays off, so tomorrow will be the first real test…

(Possible) major commute problems for next 6 weeks

Portions of Interstate-5 in Sacramento are going to be closed for the next 6 weeks in order to repair a section of the freeway called “The Boat Section.” Even though my bus commute from Davis does not go through I-5, it is estimated that there could be delay of up to 60 minutes each way (though at this point, nobody really knows how bad the delays will be.) These delays would be because a lot of traffic that would go through I-5 will be detouring through I-80, which is the route my bus takes.
