Current reading

I am attempting to read Neal Stephenson’s novel Anathem.

The Wikipedia entry summarizes the plot as:

Anathem is set on a planet called Arbre, where the protagonist, Erasmas, is among a cohort of secluded scientists, philosophers and mathematicians who are called upon to save the world from impending catastrophe…

I know from previous experience that his novels are very hard to read (I’ve read Snow Crash, and started but never finished Cryptonomicon), but so far (I’ve only gotten to page 36), this is ridiculously hard. Good thing that there is a glossary, since it seems like I need to refer to it every other word.)

I haven’t had this much trouble reading anything since I looked at some quantum mechanics textbooks when I was an undergraduate. (No, I was not a physics major, but I had some curiosity in the subject.) This book is about 900 pages long, and I think I’ll be lucky to finish 10 pages per day. Check back in 3 months to see if I’m done!

  1. Hang in there! I’m at page 300 and it finally started to pick up.

  2. That’s good to know. Thanks!
