Nonsecure mailboxes

When waiting to catch the bus to work this morning, I was looking at peoples’ mailboxes near the sidewalk, and thought “I hope they don’t actually use these except to receive junk mail.” Given the problem of identity theft, the mailboxes without locks (which are almost all of them) are totally useless, and people with these mailboxes should either buy one with a lock or get a PO Box.

Addendum (6/14): Added link to my Twitter entry.

  1. That’s really odd…. With so many identity theft cases being discovered these days, you would think they would lock their mailboxes.

Do you live in a big city or a really small town?

Hey, this is my first visit to your site. I like it. You have an honest view in your posts on things. Which makes for a good blog. Thanks for visiting mine.

  2. Most of the old ones only have a pull-down door in the front, so the mailman can’t deliver your mail if you lock it.

The ones you can find in the store nowadays have a slot for the mailman to insert your mail into, and you unlock it in the back side to remove your mail.

I live in a moderate size city/town (population around 60,000.) It has (I think) a pretty low crime rate.

    Thanks for the thumbs up!
